What are the Benefits of Medical Cannabis in NSW?
Cannabis is a safe and effective treatment for symptoms of these illnesses and diseases, among others:
How Can Cannabis Help?
Cannabis can be administered using a variety of methods, including smoking, vaporizing, liquid tinctures, consuming edibles, capsules, as well as using dermal patches, or oral sprays.
Cannabinoids are made up of over hundreds of different chemicals, but the two major ones are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
THC is the chemical known to produce the psychoactive effects and euphoric feelings that users experience, but it can also help to ease many symptoms of illnesses.
On the other hand, CBD has the same medicinal effect as THC without the common psychoactive “high” most people experience. It is commonly prescribed for its natural pain relief, anti-inflammatory properties, to suppress the growth of cancer cells, and reduce anxiety.
THC has been known to increase appetite, boost the metabolism, relieve chronic pain, and reduce nausea. There has also been a growing interest of CBD oil to treat conditions of childhood epilepsy, seizures, and even arthritis.
Medical Cannabis NSW Regulations
On 24 February 2006, the Australian parliament amended its Narcotic Drugs Act to legalize the growing of cannabis for medicinal and scientific purposes.
As of July 2006, the NSW government made it the first state to gain approval to grow cannabis under license from the federal government as part of plant cultivation research.
On 1 November 2006, medical cannabis was legalized at the federal level. Along with Western Australia, New South Wales was the first state to begin allowing doctors to prescribe cannabis as medicine.
Previously, medical marijuana was only available in NSW to patients enrolled in clinical trials, however, Premier Mike Baird said under the regulatory changes cannabis could be prescribed for patients who have exhausted standard treatment options.

Obtaining Access to Medical Cannabis in NSW
There is no restriction on which patients can apply for medical cannabis, but the new regulations allow easier access by treatment specialists who must apply through NSW Health to the Commonwealth Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) rather than by individual patients.
It still remains difficult to get a cannabis prescription in NSW – Approval is required by doctors of patients with particular medical conditions, as well as their application for medicinal cannabis through the Special Access Scheme.
Out of the Special Access Scheme, the NSW government developed the Medicinal Cannabis Compassionate Use Scheme, but this is only designated to apply to patients 18 and over with terminal illnesses.
The scheme provides guidelines for police officers to help them determine the appropriate circumstances to not charge adults with a terminal illness who use cannabis to alleviate their symptoms, as well as caregivers who assist them.
To register for the scheme, adults with a terminal illness require a medical practitioner who is registered in Australia and involved in their ongoing care to certify that the person has a terminal illness as defined by the scheme. Each eligible adult may nominate up to three caregivers who will be registered under the scheme.
